Set to compete with Maye
Brissett is in line to compete with newcomer Drake Maye for the Patriots' starting QB job ahead of the upcoming NFL season, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that New England selected Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it's only a matter of time before the North Carolina product is installed as the team's starter. That said, it's possible that the rookie begins the season as Brissett's understudy, with coach Jerod Mayo noting Thursday of the Patriots' signal-caller situation that "at the end of the day, our philosophy is the best players will play. We will compete and the best player will start." Brissett rejoined the franchise that drafted him in 2016 on a reported one-year, $8 million deal, providing New England with an experienced option who can either helm the offense until Maye is deemed ready to do so, or alternatively serve as quality backup and mentor to Maye, who doesn't turn 22 until Aug. 30. Meanwhile, 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke are also on hand to provide the Patriots with QB depth ahead of training camp.

Excited about competing with Maye
Brissett said Wednesday he's looking forward to competing with rookie third overall pick Drake Maye for the starting quarterback job, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran quarterback signed a one-year deal worth $8 million with the Patriots in March, presumably with full expectation that he'd be ceding the starting reins to a top-five draft pick in relatively short order. However, Brissett hit all the right notes in his comments Wednesday, noting competition "brings out the best in all of us" while also acknowledging the ultimate decision on who wins the summertime job battle will be out of his control to an extent.

Brissett kept the seat warm for 11 starts last season while the Browns waited for Deshaun Watson to serve his suspension. He held his own in the caretaker role, finishing middle of the pack (more or less) in most passing stats despite struggling on deep throws. While he looked downfield at a good clip -- his 8.5 average target depth ranked seventh and his 47 attempts of 20-plus yards were sixth most through Week 12 -- his on-target percentage ranked 22nd (42.6) and he threw four interceptions on deep attempts (3rd most). After signing with Washington this offseason, Brissett enters training camp as the backup to Sam Howell. Washington wants Howell, whose only start last season came in Week 18, to win the job, but if Brissett finds himself under center he’ll have a good trio of wideouts to target, led by Terry McLaurin. While unlikely to do much more than what he did in Cleveland last season, Brissett is accurate enough to have value in two-QB leagues if he's surrounded by decent talent.
